Half Century Lettuce
A variety of lettuce
How to sow half century lettuce: Direct seed outdoors, thin to 20cm when seedlings are 3cm tall
Sun requirement for half century lettuce: Plant in Partial Sun
A small, exceptionally compact green butterhead or buttercrunch type with thick, substantial, crisp leaves. A perfect home garden lettuce, too succulent to stand marketing. A New Zealand heirloom from New Plymouth, described by the grower as a survivor from the 1850s. Birds love it, so keep netting handy. Sow in trays in spring and autumn, prick out at 2.5 cm and transplant at 3.5 cm high at 20 cm diagonal spacing.
