better late than never – i've set up the irrigation to use a raspberry pi, so i can finally adhere to the odds/evens date rules that so much of NZ uses but no automated system sold here can handle. Have to have a whole calendar system in your micro to be able to handle it.

the rules are: * odd-numbered houses can water the garden on odd-numbered days of the month. * even-numbered houses can water the garden on even-numbered days of the month.

If you're away over new years, that's Dec 31 then Jan 1, so if you use an off-the-shelf system watering every second day, you're in breach of the rules. aaaand you'd stay in breach of the rules, until you got home and did whatever silly reset dance to tell your cheap system to change which day was the 2nd day.

I've got a valve that is turned on and off by a Belkin wemo, hooked up to Home Assistant. I've got a weather station that can tell me many things including if it's raining.
