All species have large, 4-18cm wide, trumpet-shaped, showy flowers. The genus includes annual and perennial herbaceous plants, woody shrubs, and small trees. Hibiscus is generally grown as an ornamental. A tea can be made from the flowers that has a distinctive tanginess and color.
