Coconuts are a member of the Arecaceae (Palm) family and are classified into two types: tall and dwarf. Tall varieties can grow to heights of 30 meters. Coconut trees grow slowly: they will produce their first fruit in 6-10 years, and take 15-20 years to reach peak production. Their fruit has a wide range of culinary and cosmetic uses. They have a shallow, fibrous root system characteristic of grass species - they lack a tap root and only a few roots grow deep enough to provide stability. Coconut trees can be killed by light frosts, and they will only bear fruit at steady temperatures above 29°C.
