People have to plant sassafras on purpose? It's a native species here and grows well in poor soil but does not thrive without sun. Nice tree for rehabilitating clear-cut areas. Trees old enough to have rough bark are not palatable to goats & are left alone, although young seedlings are eaten with great relish.
